In 1903, the Terrells of Wexford County, Ireland, came to America
seeking a beter life. Not long after arriving, the Terrell brothers
had a dispute. In an attempt to assert his independence, one of
the brothers changed the spelling of his name to "Terrill."
He later became "Grandpa Terrill" and created a new life,
a new family, and a new name--or so he thought.
What's
in a name? In Ireland, the prefixes of names have great significance:
"Mc" or "Fitz" means "son of," and
"O" before a name means "grandson of" or "from
the family of." Thus, the name "O'Terrill" means
"ancestors of the Terrill family."
Now,
we all know that the Irish love to spin a good tale--especially
after we've tipped a few--but let's cut to the chase: Yes, Rufus
did have a grandfather from the Emerald Isle named "Terrill"
who did have a fight with his brother, whose last name was "Terrell."
And yes, Linda did have a grandmother from Drogheda, County Louth,
Ireland, which makes her a bona fide descendant of bogtrotters.
But
here's the real story of how the “O” got into O’Terrill’s:
Rufus’s middle name starts with an “O” (You've
been dying to know this since you walked in the door, right?), and
Rufus's bride's (that would be Linda again) middle name starts with
an “O." So there you have it: O’Terrill’s!
And now you understand the meaning of "blarney" too! Éireann
go Brách: Ireland Forever!
